From Dr Dave and Laura – A primer on naturopathy and functional herbalism at The Haven

Naturopathic Medicine with Dr. Dave Hamilton:

  • The Healing Power of Nature: Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.
  • Identify and Treat the Causes: The naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
  • First Do No Harm: Naturopathic physicians follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:
    • Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat;
    • Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and
    • Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.
  • Doctor as Teacher: Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.
  • Treat the Whole Person: Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, naturopathic physicians encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development.
  • Prevention: Naturopathic physicians emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

Functional Herbalism with Laura Denyes:

Functional Herbalism is a model of herbalism that honors the worldwide tradition of plant-based care, while recognizing the importance of functional techniques like laboratory testing and nutrition in addressing illness. Functional Herbalism uses lifestyle modifications and herbal supplements alongside functional testing to address the whole person rather than an isolated set of symptoms or disease.

Functional Herbalism is a systems-based holistic approach that recognizes that each person is different. Functional herbalists spend time with their clients, listening to their histories and learning their stories. This involves the client in the healing process, and enables the herbalist to tailor individual programs for each client and their needs.

Functional Herbalism understands that health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of vitality that is different for every person. In health, the human body regulates itself through a dynamic balance of the body systems. Functional herbalism supports these natural healing mechanisms rather than attacking disease directly.

Functional Herbalism focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Functional herbalists examine the many internal and external factors that influence health and disease, including genetics, environment, spiritual and mental health, and lifestyle. We ask what function has been lost in the body, and what can be done to restore that function.

Part of our training as naturopathic physician and functional herbalist is that of a family medical doctor.  We can treat a variety of different health concerns such as general health and wellness, anxiety, depression, autoimmune disorders, eczema/psoriasis, thyroid disease (Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s, and Grave’s disease), pain management, food sensitivities, diabetes, adjunctive cancer treatments, and acute infections.

The first visit is approximately 1.5 to 2hrs where we spend the time reviewing your concerns with care, together we create a protocol from a toolbox of modalities such as herbal medicine, physical medicine, homeopathy, diet/nutrition, lifestyle modification. We strive to discover how your body works and how all the puzzle pieces fit to create better health for each individual.
